Description and Mission

A Way With Words & Numbers is a tutoring program that utilizes the skills and resources of graduate and undergraduate students at MU to help local students master the basic skills of literacy and math. Teams of tutors consisting of volunteers, service-learning students and work study students work at various sites in the Columbia community, assisting children in kindergarten through seventh grade.

Activities:

Students serve with elementary school children as in class tutors. We work in all CPS elementary schools (20), all middle schools (3), Boys & Girls Club, Moving Ahead and Daniel Boone Regional Library. Tutors are required to 1) attend 3 hours of training, 2) spend 1 hour every other week writing a weekly report, 3) spend 1 hour every other week attending a tutor meeting and tutor a minimum of 3 hours a week. This makes a semester commitment of about 40 hours.
