Animals
The Thomas Jefferson Agricultural Institute is a nonprofit agriculture education center also based in Columbia. The institute promotes agricultural education and research in Missouri and throughout the United States. Jefferson Farm & Gardens will host tours, classes, workshops and special events in addition to regular visitation. Up to 10,000 school children are expected to participate in educational programs each year.
MU students who commit to service learning at the Jefferson Farm & Gardens can expect to be involved in the day-to-day care of animals housed at the farm. Animals currently at the farm include horses, sheep and goats, with planned additions of cattle and hogs this spring. Feeding animals, cleaning stalls, and monitoring animal health will be repetitive tasks. Additionally, students may be involved in visiting with visitors to the farm, including both school groups and adults. Based on students' interests and expertise, other tasks may/will be assigned - including assisting with animal-related educational program development, exercising horses, etc. A strong background/interest in animal science and evidence of dependability/responsibility are essential for this service learning location. Farm is located at 4800 New Haven Road, Columbia MO.
