Description and Mission

Grade A Plus, Inc. is a community based organization committed to providing academic support and cultural enrichment for youth and their families. Grade A Plus, Inc. seeks to enrich and encourage the whole child by engaging volunteers that care and desire to perform service through the activities of the Grade A! Academic Support and Enrichment Program. The program provides academic support for math, reading, writing, and access to learning through technology. Enrichment experiences are also provided such as dance, yoga, swimming, and robotics activities. The program contributes toward building confidence, perseverance, identity development, as well as academic success and achievement for the youth enrolled. Service learning projects are assigned to enable MU students to exhibit their leadership in a real world community setting. Specialty areas such as data management, nutrition education, marketing and youth development are available to help MU students gain experience in these real world community based activities. Interaction with youth through tutoring and mentoring is a base expectation for participation in the program as part of the service learning project.. The Grade A! Academic Support and Enrichment Program provides tutoring, mentoring and enrichment activities led by college and community volunteers. The "Grade A!" program operates on Tues., Wed., & Thurs. Every Fall and Spring semester for 10-13 weeks, and a summer term from May-June. Tutors, Skill Development Leaders, and Project Leaders are needed to assist youth after school and to support community development goals of the organization. The goal of the program is to provide 60-90 minutes of tutoring and 30-60 minutes of mentoring/enrichment activities each week at a 1:2 ratio. Volunteers are to promote achievement for personal and academic development of the youth enrolled. Service Learning students provide specialized activities and services in the area of their studies or interests: Nutrition, African American Psychology, Career Development, Marketing, Business, Elementary or Secondary Education, or Community Development along with spending time in tutoring.
