Description and Mission

The mission of the Columbia Farmers Market is to provide both the local farmer and consumer a reliable, regulated marketplace for the direct exchange of high quality and safe food. By facilitating such commerce the market strives to meet the needs of the local consumer while encouraging sustainable agriculture in mid-Missouri.

The CFM volunteer will become immersed within the emerging local food community of Columbia and gain practical experience helping assist with different children's activities and programs at the market. Under the guidance of the Executive Director, the volunteer will help partner organizations run daily children's educational activities, special events, and perform other food-related outreach. Engaging local farmers and the community, they will help contribute in the creation of a community-based food system. Volunteer time could include working together to create educational programs on food and sustainability and helping organize several different programs at market like the Good Food Detectives children's club, weekly youth education activities at The Greenhouse (education booth), and seasonal "culinary" education. During these projects the volunteer will work alongside the Executive Director for both guidance and structure, providing feedback and background to the themes she/he is working on. The goal of the volunteer program is to become more versed in the education, outreach and community-organizing aspects of local food and the farmers market.
