Description and Mission

Turning Point Mission Statement: to offer dignity and promote hope for individuals in Columbia who are experiencing homelessness Turning Point welcomes people without secure housing who are the most impoverished people in our community daily, Monday -Friday 8 am to noon. It is located in the Wilkes Blvd United Methodist Church in a north central neighborhood

Activities:

Turning Point serves an average of 55 - 70 persons a day to meet some of their basic, immediate human needs, like showers and laundry facilities to keep self and clothes clean and to prevent theft by safely storing 2 bags of their belongings. It allows homeless people to stay connected through internet and telephone access and charging their cell phones. They can use the site as a physical mailing address to receive mail and checks. Short term needs are addressed daily by referrals from staff. Long term needs are addressed through weekly visits of outreach workers from the VA, Phoenix House, Burrell, and health agencies. It provides volunteer work opportunities to some of the homeless clients and to service learning students and interns. Some of the opportunities to serve are: 1. Intake/Front Desk Assistant: signing people in, doing intake, signing clients up for showers, laundry, bag storage, mail, etc., collect data on daily usage; 2. Client advocates (interns and upper classmen) who do assessments, make referrals, provide individual assistance, follow-up 3. Marketing/Media Intern: develop brochures and newsletters, maintain website, oversee video shoot, write press releases, procure media coverage
