Description and Mission

Grant Montessori Preschool, is a public-private partnership between Columbia Public Schools and The Rollins Reading Company, a Missouri 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The preschool currently serves up to twenty children, ten of whom are provided with scholarships based on certain eligibility criteria. We are located inside Grant Elementary school and work directly with the school system. We follow the Montessori Method of education in a mixed age classroom with two certified Montessori teachers.

The Montessori method provides opportunities for intellectual and holistic growth in young children through discovery learning in a prepared environment. Children learn at their own pace by using all of their senses in self-correcting materials that support the learning through the discovery method. The Montessori teacher prepares the environment using specific materials and opportunities that are the "next step" in the learning for each child. The materials are tailored for each child and are appropriate for the current stage of the child's development. In the outdoor environment, the children experience living things in nature, and use appropriate materials and structures to refine gross motor skills. The children have unstructured peer play as part of their holistic development.
