Description and Mission

The Boone County Schools Mental Health Coalition is a multidisciplinary collaboration among Boone County’s six independent school districts and the University of Missouri to promote the mental health and well-being of all children in our County. One of the arms or the Boone County Schools Mental Health Coalition it its collaboration with the Center for Responsive Education (CORE). All of the students who attend CORE have demonstrated significant difficulties with their social and emotional abilities within the general education setting. The goal of CORE is to increase student appropriate school/work related behavior for the purpose of returning the student back to the general education setting. The Boone County Schools Mental Health Coalition operates a program entitled MARS at CORE. The MARS program is focused on teaching students within the CORE school setting the skills needed for goal-setting through the use of motivational interviewing. The motivational interviewing approach is used as it promotes change thinking in students, and increases student agency in their goal making.

Activities:

You would be assigned at least one student that you would build a relationship with and work through the MARS intervention. You will use Motivational interviewing to help promote the change thinking in the student, This change think will allow and help the student make progress on their specific behavioral goals. Your interactions with the student(s) will help them to become more invested in making behavioral changes, and return to general education settings. Your work with the students will help them to learn how to make prosocial student adult relationships, as well as goal setting skills.
