Description and Mission

Our mission is to reduce the occurrence of maternal and infant mortality by providing sterile birthing kits, childcare and development centers, and mother to mother sponsorships in East Africa. BEMM was started over three years ago when I read about how women give birth in Uganda. Most women here regardless of age, race, or economic status have a choice. We get to choose if we want a midwife, doula, hospital, epidural, natural, narcotics, etc. But 1 in 11 women die in Eastern Africa due to pregnancy related causes; every minute of every day, a woman dies from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth. And if the typical African mom gives birth to 6-8 babies in her lifetime and in Ethiopia the lifetime risk of dying in pregnancy or childbirth is 1 in 7, women are at an incredibly high risk of dying due to childbirth. And if a mother dies delivering her eighth child, what happens to 1-7? Maternal health directly impacts the number of orphans in the world. I am a mom to six children. Two are from Ethiopia. Motherhood, adoption and Africa are my passion.

Because Every Mother Matters performs a variety of health, fundraising, and promotion activites to raise awareness of birth-related mortality in Africa.
